TOBERMORY, ISLE OF MULL PA75
Perched high up in the hills above the picturesque town of Tobermorey, this holiday home has been designed to make best use of views of the bay below and mountains beyond.
The project, for a repeat client, combines two existing outbuildings to create a two bedroom self-contained holiday house with additional living/ sleeping accommodation within a mezzanine above the open-plan kitchen/ dining and living room.
Traditional 60cm thick stone walls are preserved where possible and a new independent timber structure is erected within, creating an internal insulation zone between the structural columns. The new structural elements are left exposed and combine with an entirely glazed gable end with views over the sea, to create a dramatic yet comfortable living space. Additional light is drawn into the building via a horizontal band of fenestration above the stone walls and allows the slate roof with concealed gutters to appear to float above the building below.
