HACKFORD ROAD, LONDON SW9

The submitted planning application seeks permission for the redevelopment of a complex of industrial buildings located in the London Borough of Lambeth. The site comprises a parcel of land of approximately 0.13 hectares in size and was historically conceived as an elephant and horse hospital.

The brick buildings are currently used as storage for The Type Archive, distributed throughout two principal buildings of two storeys in height. In addition there are a number of single storey outbuildings bordering the perimeter of the site to the north and west.

This project comprises the conversion of the existing units into workshops, archives, and exhibition spaces for the Type Museum arranged throughout the ground floors of the existing buildings, apart from where entrance lobbies to the flats above are proposed and 8 residential maisonettes on the upper floors.

An additional mezzanine within the Elephant Building and a single storey new build, replacing the existing single-story outbuildings along the Western boundary of the site, will provide further facilities for the Type Museum including; space for a rare operational Wharfdale Press, a Café and WC’s.

In design terms, the scheme seeks to make best use of the existing buildings and fabric of the site. Where new elements are proposed these are sub-ordinate in scale to the existing buildings and are seen to make a positive yet sympathetic contribution to the development as a whole.
